Delphine Bedient returns to us with this devastatingly good book of poems. When writing a description card for a book fair, I listed them as “gut busting/gut wrenching poems– !?!” You laugh out loud, then your shoulders sag with the weight of a familiar sadness, then your lips curl a little with a mysterious satisfaction of having been through something of major significance.
Delphine is the author of the previous Two Plum book Down and Out On A Yacht and many classic works of small press magic, including OK Cupid Messages I Have Not Responded To, Men Apologizing To Me, The Collected Status Updates Of Delphine Bedient, and many more. Delphine is the publisher of Quotidian Press, where most of her works are in print!
excerpts:
Dogs In The Rain Poem
I would happily walk the
dogs with you in the rain
the dark the park empty save
one single car running
I know that if we lived together
you would always be eating
my chips.
Maybe Sunday Poem
Could we ever be this
couple drinking coffee on
Saturday morning trick
question I work on Saturdays
but maybe Sunday I find
I can never quite have all the answers
there’s always some part that I
leave up to you.
Disappearing Field Poem
If they take away this field
how will I remember the night we
stared across it I would have
tried all afternoon to imitate
the call of that one certain bird.
